Instant Pot Orange Chicken Recipe (1)

My favorite types of meals for dinner are all-in-one-pot recipes that are easy to prepare. Life is getting too busy to cook every day…so when creating this recipe you will have enough servings for multiple meals.

Since I purchased my Instant Pot, I tried to convert my stove top recipes to Instant Pot versions.

My favorite Orange Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe is mouthwateringly delicious but takes at least two hours to cook. So I simplified the recipe for an Instant Pot while still keeping my signature sweet and sour flavor.

How to make Orange Sauce

Here is what we need to make sweet and spicy Orange Sauce:

  • Orange juice
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Soy sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Brown sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Red pepper flakes

Just mix all the ingredient together and set aside until ready to use.

How to make Orange Chicken in Instant Pot

Saute the chicken.

Dice the chicken breasts in to bite size pieces. Season with salt and pepper and mix well.

Set your Instant Pot to Sauté on high heat by pressing “SAUTE” button. I like to brown the chicken in three batches, not to overcrowd the pot. Otherwise, your chicken will boil in released juices instead of sautéing to achieve a beautiful golden color. So, sauté each batch of diced and seasoned chicken for about 5 minutes until it has a beautiful golden color. The chicken doesn’t need to be cooked through, since we are going to cook it again.

    Add orange sauce and cook.

Add all the sautéed chicken in Instant Pot, pour the orange sauce and mix it. Cover with a lid and cook on Manual high pressure for 7 minutes. Make sure that the venting knob is turned to “Sealing”!

When it is done, let the pot naturally release the pressure for 5 minutes. Then switch the knob to venting position to release the steam. Make sure the steam is fully released and the valve is completely down before opening the pot!

    Thicken the sauce.

Set the Instant Pot to “SAUTE” function again. As soon as the liquid starts boiling, add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch mixed with ¼ cup of water. Continue to simmer until the sauce thickens to the desired consistency.

    What to serve Orange Chicken

I like to serve Orange Chicken with rice and broccoli. Also, you can sprinkle some sesame seeds and green onions on top.

Enjoy your delicious quick and easy Instant Pot Orange Chicken!

    • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

    • In a medium size mixing bowl, mix together orange juice, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, maple syrup, and red pepper flakes.

    • Set Instant Pot to Sauté on high heat by pressing “sauté” button twice. Sauté chicken in three batches for about 5 minutes, until golden color. After the chicken is done, scoop it out to a different bowl.

    • Add sautéed chicken back to Instant Pot and add orange marinade.

    • Cover with a lid and cook on Manual high pressure for 7 minutes. Make sure that the venting knob is turned to “Sealing”!

    Notes

    1. When you brown the chicken, it’s better to do it in two or three batches, not to overcrowd the pot. Otherwise, your chicken will boil in released juices instead of sautéing and won’t the golden color.

Very good but next time I’ll change a few things. There is a lot of cooking time, so I’ll minimize the browning to about 2-3 minutes to avoid drying it out. Also, to give it more Asian flavor, I’ll add some ginger and a tiny bit of sesame oil. I did use the 50% less sugar OJ to make it healthier.

      Hi Veronika,

We all enjoy this wonderful meal
You were right : maple leaf syrup is a great idea
Only our daughter (20 years) didn’t enjoy the “orange juice”, but she is sometimes complicated

We used rice ans green beans
There was just enough sauce to humidify the rice
The green beans, because my father (88) can’t bite on broccolis, but he enjoyed really the nice taste

It stays a great easy meal for us all
Thank you so much for the recipe

Hi Jen! It’s hard to tell you why it came out dry without seeing it… The only reason I can think is you could overcook it while browning. During this step, we don’t need to cook the chicken through, as we will continue to cook it more later with the sauce.

    FAQs

Why is my Instant Pot chicken rubbery? ›

Rubbery Instant Pot shredded chicken is usually the result of overcooking the meat.

What is the orange sauce made of in orange chicken? ›

How to make the orange chicken sauce. The orange sauce is made from a mixture of the orange juice and zest, sugar, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and rice vinegar. This is bubbled up in the wok until slightly thickened. The chicken is then added back in, and tossed in the sauce until fully coated.

How do you keep chicken from getting tough in Instant Pot? ›

The key to getting perfectly juicy boneless chicken breasts is to cook them on a trivet, above the liquid. I find that this results in a better texture than cooking them on the bottom of the pot. I also think their texture is best when you quickly release the pressure, rather than letting it naturally release.

Does cooking chicken longer in Instant Pot make it more tender? ›

This dinner staple cooks up perfectly every time in the Instant Pot. You can aim for firm but juicy chicken for cubing, or let it cook a little bit longer for tender shredded chicken.

Can you overcook chicken in an Instapot? ›

While all cuts of chicken are fair game for the Instant Pot, thighs are the most forgiving. Because chicken breast is so lean, just a couple of extra minutes of cook time turns them from juicy to overcooked and dry.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Unlike chicken breasts, chicken thighs and drumsticks actually become more tender the longer they cook. That's because of their makeup. Dark meat has an abundant amount of connective tissue, which dissolves into gelatin as the meat cooks, rendering it juicy and tender.

What is the difference between General Tso's and orange chicken? ›

Compared to General Tso's, orange chicken usually has a lighter-colored sweet, sour, savory glaze. It's not as spicy-hot because dried red chiles aren't as common or used as heavily in this dish. All recipes ask for orange in some form — juice, zest, dried peel, or a combination thereof.

What is Panda Express orange chicken made of? ›

Ingredients: dark meat chicken, water, sugar, distilled vinegar, modified food starch, corn starch, potato starch, contains less than 2% of: wheat, orange extract, caramel color, salt, garlic, phosphoric acid, rice wine, sesame oil. *The dish uses a proprietary batter and sauce.

What is the Chinese version of orange chicken? ›

This dish may have originally come from the "tangerine chicken" dish from Hunan, China. In Chinese, this dish is known as "陳皮雞", literally "dried citrus peel chicken", referring to dried orange or tangerine peel.

Does pressure cooking chicken make it tough? ›

Like other cooking methods, a pressure cooker can give you either tender or tough meats, depending how you use it.

Can pressure cooker soften chicken bones? ›

You use quite a bit of water in the pressure cooker so you can cook the bones for enough time so the bones become soft. Then you can grind them up easily with this grinder. Chicken bones, cooked at high pressure in a pressure cooker, take about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Do you cover meat with liquid in a pressure cooker? ›

While you may cover meat almost completely for a conventional braise, use just enough liquid for the cooker to reach pressure – during pressure cooking the meat will release it's own juice and braise in that flavorful liquid, instead.

What is the best meat to pressure cook? ›

You can still pressure cook leaner pieces – like eye of round and top sirloin – but these work best if they've been stuffed, shredded or rolled (with other ingredients). Best cuts of beef to use: Chuck steak, Round Roast, Shoulder, Pot roast, Ribs, Brisket, Oxtail.

Is it better to pressure cook or slow cook chicken? ›

Ultimately, slow cooking allowed our chicken to be perfectly seasoned without compromising the meat texture, a luxury pressure cooking can't afford.

Why is my pressure cooked chicken chewy? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

What causes chicken to have a rubbery texture? ›

Overcooking might play a role in your chicken's tire-like texture. Leaving chicken in a pan, oven, or grill for just a little too long can suck the moisture right out and leave you with a dry, rubbery bird. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Why is my pressure cooker chicken tough? ›

If your instant pot chicken is dry, you may have overcooked it. Don't worry – you can fix this! Stir your cooked chicken with 1/2 cup of chicken broth and store it with excess broth. The chicken will absorb the liquid and get a moist texture.
